James M.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Rangi for many years. She saw me through a kidney transplant and doctored me after the fact. She is very in touch with her patients and always listens and gives straight accurate diagnosis. Office people are always friendly and never a long wait. She has seen me down a long road and I am very indebted to her.

I speak fluent Punjabi, Hindi & Urdu. I frequently travel back to India to immerse myself more deeply in rural communities where access to health care is challenging by providing free medical services. I thrive on the challenge to understand things deeply and believe that a good physician needs to be a champion of lifelong learning, always seeking new things to learn and new ways to serve.

It’s more personal
than professional

My devotion to promoting awareness and early detection of chronic diseases comes from an immense personal loss. My ‘cause’ for desperately trying to help people with such conditions started with a deep-rooted trauma of losing my cousin.

For me, this is more personal than professional. Because no one can really understand the pain of seeing your loved one suffer and eventually lose in the battle of preventable health condition unless they have gone through this.”

My life’s work is dedicated to him and everyone else who is going through the similar trauma.

So, my mission is to prevent the progress and complications of diabetes at the earliest stage possible.

My Story
Dr. Jaiwant Rangi

I became doctor because of my family. I became endocrinologist because of love for my family. And a firm believer in the power of preventive medicine and natural healing for the love of all of our families.

When I was born, my father was away, serving with the Indian army in the war zone. High in the mountains, he suffered wounds from an attack and bled to death at the age of 33. Hemorrhaging is a leading cause of preventable death for combat soldiers. I never met my father. But he left a diary with a written wish that his newborn daughter would be a doctor, someone who could help people prevent illness, someone who could help save lives.

I was the youngest of the three children. My mother, who never finished high school herself, did all in her power to ensure that my sister, my brother and I received the best possible education. We moved to Pilani, a small town in northern India, where my father had attended college. We lived with my father‘s younger brother and his family. There I was able to ride my bicycle to an excellent all-girls school for my full education. At home I learned from my mother, who modeled humility, service, tolerance and acceptance.

With the wishes of my father, the determination of my mother, and the support of my uncle and aunt I started to work my medical education.

And because of their son, my cousin brother Ratanbir, I chose to become an endocrinologist. Ratanbir was eight years younger than me but as we grew older, the gap became larger. Ratanbir, failed to thrive. He did not grow at a normal pace. He often felt ill from common infections. He missed school a lot. His puberty was delayed. I begged my uncle and aunt to take him to doctors to understand why. After a long struggle they were able to make the long journey by bus to see a specialist in Delhi, because the town we lived in, was far from sophisticated health care.

They were able to diagnose him with panhypopituitarism. Basically, the tiny pituitary gland in the center of his brain did not work. It failed to produce several of the hormones necessary for the body to function and grow. Diagnosis was key to his treatment. And the doctors who diagnosed him with Endocrinologist, doctors who study hormones and glands. He received state of the art hormone replacement therapy including Growth Hormone injections and later left a very normal healthy happy life. It was my curiosity to learn about my brother’s condition that led me to pursue career in endocrinology.

At the age of 40, he got a serious mosquito borne illness called dengue fever. Drop in platelets is a common complication of that condition but because of his adrenal insufficiency and not getting timely help with glucocorticoids he died of severe brain hemorrhage which could have been prevented. That led to a lot of anger, frustration and introspection how we could have prevented the unforeseen situation!

Later, my 50-year-old brother-in-law dropped dead dancing at a family event. Medical examination confirmed this to be a sudden myocardial infarction or heart attack. A heart attack occurs when the flow of blood to the heart is severely reduced or blocked. The blockage is usually due to buildup of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle.

He was considered healthy since he had no medical problems, but he did not take his family history of heart disease and his sedentary lifestyle serious enough. He could have prevented his fatal heart attack by getting regular checkups, being screened for heart disease and most importantly by living a heart healthy lifestyle!

So, after decades of working in the health system that focuses on treating acute symptoms, a system that often neglects prevention, I have developed a comprehensive program to support my patient’s good health.

I want to empower people to prevent or reverse chronic health conditions by helping them address the root cause of their issues.

If you are not sick, that is the perfect time to learn how to maintain your good health. If you have health issues that is even more important for you to get help & work on the underlying problems by improving the functioning of your body and not just medications to work as band aid.

By working on intense lifestyle changes, you help your body to achieve the highest level of functioning, prevent health issues & complications and get off of medications! Please allow us to help you in your journey towards a better life, create healing and wellness and life full of abundance.

Jasleen Bal
Wellness Coach

I became interested in healthcare at an early age. My maternal grandparents passed away in their early 60s due to various health issues that they did not have the knowledge or resources to prevent and treat. Watching their suffering motivated me to join the medical field.

I had the opportunity to work with Dr. Rangi for a year in helping her create her lifestyle program, which helps people just like my grandparents live long, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

I support Dr. Rangi as a wellness coach remotely while pursuing my passion for healthcare by majoring in Public Health at UC Berkeley.
